The right shop vac filter for drywall dust, debris and water

The filter decides whether fine dust stays in the tank or blows back into the room. A standard cartridge is fine for everyday debris. Drywall dust and cold ashes need a fine dust or HEPA rated cartridge, ideally with a dust bag. Water needs a foam sleeve and nothing else. Most complaints about a vac that "spews dust" trace back to the wrong filter.

Shop-Vac's FAQ warns that the wrong filter could cause the dust to blow back into the room. The maker of Vacmaster gives the same cause for dust coming out of the blower port, and says to first check that the filter is seated and has no holes or tears.

The Vacmaster Beast 5 gallon is the one pick whose listing describes a fine dust setup in the box. The maker claims the cartridge and bag capture particles down to 1 micron. That is a maker claim, and it is not the same as HEPA. One owner summary here shows the gap in practice: buyers of a small CRAFTSMAN vac that ships with only a filter bag report fine dust coming out the back.
Bags are worth it
The maker of Vacmaster says collection bags extend the life of a filter. They also make emptying cleaner, since the dust leaves in the bag. Its FAQ says to tap or brush the cartridge clean after use and to replace it when you notice a loss of suction.
A HEPA filter does not make a HEPA vacuum
This matters if you are dealing with lead paint or job site silica, not ordinary household dust.
- The EPA's lead renovation rule defines a HEPA vacuum as one designed with a HEPA filter as the last filtration stage, where all the air drawn in is expelled through that filter with none leaking past. A HEPA filter captures 99.97 percent of particles of 0.3 microns.
- The EPA tells renovation firms to look for a vacuum designed to run with a HEPA filter, rather than a shop vacuum that can be fitted with one, because a retrofitted vacuum is not necessarily sealed.
- OSHA's construction silica standard bars dry sweeping where it could add to silica exposure unless wet sweeping, HEPA-filtered vacuuming or similar methods are not feasible. Its Table 1 calls for a HEPA-filtered vacuum for tasks such as cleaning drilled holes.
None of the seven picks here is sold as a sealed HEPA vacuum. For a bathroom patch in a newer home, a fine dust cartridge and a bag is the normal setup.
